Objetivo: realizar análises parasitológicas em amostras de solo provenientes da represa da Bica situada no município de Catalão-GO. Métodos: a área do entorno da represa foi dividida em cinco parcelas, sendo realizadas coletas em dois pontos de cada parcela, superior e inferior. Foram realizadas quatro coletas em dias alternados, totalizando 40 amostras de, aproximadamente, 50g da camada superficial do solo, com profundidade máxima de cinco centímetros. As amostras foram processadas no Setor de Diagnóstico Parasitológico do Laboratório de Biologia Molecular da Universidade Federal de Catalão (UFCAT). Para as análises parasitológicas, foram utilizados cinco métodos encontrados na literatura, Rugai, Willis, Sedimentação espontânea, Ritchie e Ritchie modificado. Resultados: pelo método de Rugai, foi possível detectar larvas rabditoides do gênero Ancylostoma e Strongyloides. Utilizando o método de Ritchie modificado, foram encontrados ovos de Ascaris lumbricoidese Ancylostoma sp. Conclusão: a presença de formas evolutivas no solo da represa indica contaminação por dejetos animais e humanos, favorecendo o estabelecimento de ciclos biológicos das espécies encontradas e de outras diferentes zoonoses. Os dados obtidos demonstram a importância de sensibilizar a população de medidas de promoção da saúde, além de ações preventivas e programas de educação em saúde.


Objective: to conduct parasitological analyses in soil samples from the Bica reservoir located in the municipality of Catalão-GO. Methods: the area around the dam was divided into five plots, and samples were collected from two points in each plot, upper and lower. Four samples were collected on alternate days, totaling 40 samples of approximately 50g of topsoil, with a maximum depth of five centimeters. The samples were processed in the Parasitological Diagnostic Sector of the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Federal University of Catalão (UFCAT). For the parasitological analyses, we used five methods found in the literature, Rugai, Willis, spontaneous sedimentation, Ritchie, and modified Ritchie. Results: by the Rugai method, it was possible to detect rhabditoid larvae of the genus Ancylostoma and Strongyloides. Using the modified Ritchie method, eggs of Ascaris lumbricoidesand Ancylostoma sp were found. Conclusion: the presence of evolutive forms in the soil of the reservoir indicates contamination by animal and human waste, favoring the establishment of biological cycles of the species found and of other different zoonoses. The data obtained demonstrated the importance of raising the population's awareness of health promotion measures besides preventive actions and health education programs.

Abstract Millions of people worldwide, and especially schoolchildren, may be infected by geohelminths due to their exposure to a contaminated environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate soil contamination by Ancylostoma spp. and Toxocara spp. eggs in recreation areas at elementary schools in Pelotas, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Sand samples were collected from 22 schools and were processed using the centrifugal flotation method. Helminth eggs with zoonotic potential were found in 12 out of the 22 schools (54.5%). Contamination by Ancylostoma spp. and Toxocara spp. was observed in 36.4% (8/22) and 27.3% (6/22) of the soil samples collected at these schools, respectively. These findings of eggs show that the school communities are exposed to risks of zoonotic transmission.


Resumo Milhões de pessoas podem ser acometidas por geohelmintos, especialmente crianças em idade escolar, devido a sua maior exposição a ambientes contaminados. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a contaminação do solo por ovos de Ancylostoma spp. e Toxocara spp. em áreas de recreação de escolas de ensino fundamental da cidade de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Foram colhidas amostras de areia de 22 escolas e processadas pelo método de centrífugo-flutuação. Em 54,5% (12/22) das escolas houve registro da presença de ovos de helmintos com potencial zoonótico. A contaminação por Ancylostoma spp. e Toxocara spp. foi observada em 36,4% (8/22) e 27,3% (6/22) das amostras de solo das escolas, respectivamente. Existe a presença de ovos de Ancylostoma spp. e Toxocara spp., havendo risco de transmissão de zoonoses à comunidade escolar.

Resumen | Introducción. Los endoparásitos y ectoparásitos en perros son de distribución mundial. La estrecha relación entre los perros y el hombre implica un riesgo de transmisión de parasitosis zoonóticas, por lo cual es necesario conocer las especies que parasitan a los perros de esta zona y determinar los factores asociados. Objetivos. Estimar la prevalencia de endoparásitos y ectoparásitos, identificarlos en perros domiciliados de la zona metropolitana de Toluca, México, y determinar la prevalencia de Dipyilidium caninum en pulgas del género Ctenocephalides spp. Materiales y métodos. Se recolectaron muestras de 402 perros que fueron llevados a consulta en cuatro hospitales de referencia de Toluca. En el diagnóstico de endoparásitos, se utilizaron las técnicas coproparasitoscópicas de frotis directo, flotación y sedimentación; además, se recolectaron ectoparásitos para su identificación taxonómica. Por último, la detección de D. caninum en pulgas se hizo mediante la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR). Resultados. El 37,2 % de los perros resultó positivo para endoparásitos. Los géneros o especies identificados fueron Toxocara spp., Giardia spp., Ancylostoma spp., Cystoisospora spp., D. caninum, Taenia spp. y Trichuris vulpis. Se determinó una prevalencia de ectoparásitos de 13,13 %. Se identificaron pulgas de las especies Ctenocephalides felis y C. canis, en tanto que solo un animal presentó parasitosis por Rhipicephalus sanguineus y otro por Trichodectes canis. La prevalencia de D. caninum en pulgas fue del 9,5 %. Conclusión. La prevalencia de endoparásitos fue de 37,2 % y, la de ectoparásitos, de 13,1 %. Por primera vez en México se hizo un análisis de endoparásitos y ectoparásitos en una misma población de perros, así como el diagnóstico molecular de D. caninum.


Abstract | Introduction: Endoparasites and ectoparasites in dogs are of global distribution. The close relationship between dogs and man implies a risk for the transmission of zoonotic parasites. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the parasites hosted by dogs in specific areas and the factors associated with their presence. Objectives: To identify and to estimate the prevalence of endoparasites and ectoparasites in domiciled dogs in the Metropolitan area of Toluca, México, and the prevalence of D. caninum in fleas of the genus Ctenocephalides spp. Materials and methods: We collected samples from 402 domiciled dogs in four reference hospitals in the area in Toluca. We diagnosed endoparasites using direct smear, flotation, and sedimentation techniques and we performed the taxonomic identification of ectoparasites. Finally, the molecular diagnosis of D. caninum in fleas was made using the polymerase chain reaction technique (PCR). Results: A total of 37.2% of dogs were positive for endoparasites; the genera or species identified were Toxocara spp., Giardia spp., Ancylostoma spp., Cystoisospora spp., D. caninum, Taenia spp., and Trichuris vulpis; the prevalence of ectoparasites was 13.13%. We identified fleas of the species Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalides canis; only one animal was parasitized with Rhipicephalus sanguineus and another one with Trichodectes canis; the prevalence of D. caninum in fleas was 9.5%. Conclusion: The prevalence of endoparasites was 37.2% while that of ectoparasites was 13.1%; this is the first analysis of endoparasites and ectoparasites conducted in the same population of dogs in México together with the molecular diagnosis of D. caninum in fleas.

ABSTRACT

En adultos mayores, la ancylostomiasis tiene manifestaciones básicas como pérdida del apetito y masa muscular, evacuación excesiva, debilidad y otras que hacen propenso al adulto mayor a un estado de fragilidad, un tipo de síndrome de fallo multiorgánico crónico, donde interviene la disfunción de diversos sistemas. Este agravante fundamenta el objetivo de la presente investigación, centrado en identificar el comportamiento de los criterios clínicos, funcionales, mentales y sociodemográficos en la evaluación geriátrica del síndrome de fragilidad en adultos mayores parasitados por Ancylostoma spp. en el cantón Santiago de Píllaro. La muestra resultó integrada por un total de 102 adultos mayores a 65 años. Mediante la revisión de las historias clínicas y la aplicación de una encuesta a los participantes, se evaluó el comportamiento de los criterios sociodemográficos, médicos, funcionales, mentales y de comorbilidad asociada. Los datos obtenidos fueron procesados estadísticamente mediante análisis bivariado y regresión logística múltiple. Los factores estadísticamente asociados a la fragilidad fueron el sexo femenino (p= 0,003, IC 95% ,LI= 1,564 y LS= 8,950), los bajos ingresos económicos (p= 0,011, IC 95%: LI= 1,786 y LS= 7,433), la polifarmacia (p= 0,006, IC 95%: LI= 2,452 y LS= 14,415) ), las evacuaciones frecuentes (p=0,009, con IC95%: LI=2,704 y LS=7,536) y las afecciones bucodentales (p= 0,004, IC 95%: LI= 1,895 y LS= 6,572), por lo que se justifica la elaboración de estrategias y acciones de salud que minimicen los efectos del estado de fragilidad en la población estudiada(AU)


In older adults, ancylostomiasis has basic manifestations such as loss of appetite and muscle mass, excessive evacuation, weakness and others that make the older adult prone to a state of fragility, a type of chronic multi-organ failure syndrome, where dysfunction of various systems. This aggravating factor supports the objective of the present investigation, focused on identifying the behavior of the clinical, functional, mental and sociodemographic criteria in the geriatric evaluation of frailty syndrome in elderly adults parasitized by Ancylostoma spp. in the canton Santiago de Pillaro. The sample was made up of a total of 102 adults over 65 years of age. By reviewing the medical records and applying a survey to the participants, the behavior of the sociodemographic, medical, functional, mental and associated comorbidity criteria was evaluated. The data obtained were statistically processed using bivariate analysis and multiple logistic regression. The factors statistically associated with frailty were female sex (p = 0.003, 95% CI, LI = 1.564 and LS = 8.950), low income (p = 0.011, 95% CI: LI = 1.786 and LS = 7.433) , polypharmacy (p = 0.006, 95% CI: IL = 2.452 and LS = 14.415)), frequent bowel movements (p = 0.009, with 95% CI: IL = 2.704 and LS = 7.536) and oral disorders (p = 0.004 , 95% CI: LI = 1.895 and LS = 6.572), which is why the development of health strategies and actions that minimize the effects of the state of frailty in the population studied is justified(AU)

Abstract Helminths and protozoa are major causes of diseases in domestic animals, and many can also cause infections in humans. Knowledge of intestinal parasitoses affecting domestic animals is important for the implementation of appropriate preventive measures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in fecal samples of dogs and cats attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Metropolitan University of Santos, SP, Brazil. We also attempted to determine whether such infection was associated with sex, age, or the presence of diarrhea. We analyzed 100 fecal samples: 85 from dogs and 15 from cats. Among the dogs, 31.8% of the samples were positive, and to 40.0% among the cats. Infection was not associated with sex or age. However, among the dogs, parasitism showed a significant association with the presence of diarrhea (P = 0.013). The helminths Ancylostoma spp. and the protozoa Giardia duodenalis were the most frequent parasites in this research. Although they present unknown species and assemblages, they are parasites with a zoonotic potential of great importance in public health. Therefore, it is essential that pets are properly diagnosed and treated against gastrointestinal parasitic infection to prevent the spread of diseases.


Resumo As enfermidades causadas por helmintos e protozoários representam uma das principais causas de doenças em animais domésticos, e muitos desses parasitos podem causar infecções em seres humanos. O conhecimento das enteroparasitoses que acometem os animais domésticos é de suma importância para que medidas preventivas adequadas sejam implementadas. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a frequência de ocorrência de parasitos gastrointestinais em amostras de fezes de cães e gatos atendidos no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Metropolitana de Santos, bem como sua associação com o sexo, a idade e a presença de diarreia. Do total das amostras de cães analisadas, 31,8% estavam positivas, em relação aos gatos, e 40% apresentaram positividade. Não houve associação entre o sexo e a idade, porém, foi observada associação significativa entre a presença da parasitose e da diarreia (p=0,013) entre os cães. O helminto Ancylostoma spp. e o protozoário Giardia duodenalis foram os mais frequentes na pesquisa. Embora apresentem espécies e "assemblages" desconhecidas, são parasitos de potencial zoonóticos de grande importância em saúde pública. Assim, é essencial que os animais de companhia sejam corretamente diagnosticados e tratados contra infecções parasitárias gastrintestinais para evitar a propagação de doenças.

Las geohelmintiasis son nematodos que afectan al hombre a través de la ingesta de huevos parasitarios, afectando el estado nutricional antropométrico de la población infantil, motivo por el cual se planteó como objetivo determinar incidencia de las helmintiasis transmitidas por el suelo en el estado nutricional antropométrico de niños de 3 a 6 años en un centro escolar Guayaquil en Ecuador, durante el último semestre del 2018. Se aplicó la metodología descriptiva de corte transversal; donde se incluyeron 92 preescolares de 3 a 6 años. A cada niño(a) se le hizo su estudio antropométrico nutricional, unido a un estudio coprológico realizado a 45 niños. Se obtuvo el Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC) con el cual se determinó el estado nutricional (IMC/Edad/Sexo), usando los percentiles del Ministerio de Salud Pública de Ecuador. Se revisaron los IMC de los 35 niños que presentaron geohelminiasis quienes evidenciaron una ligera disminución en la ganancia de los valores de las variables antropométricas. Se encontró predominio del sexo femenino (54,35%), la edad fue 3,78 años, peso: 15,21 Kg y talla: 100,23 cm2, el IMC fue 16,62 Kg/cm2, sin diferencias entre el sexo; la especie de mayor ocurrencia fue la Trichuris. trichiura 43,47% (niñas 10/23) y 66,67% (niños 8/12). Se concluye que 29,34% de los preescolares estudiados están malnutridos, presentan geohelmintiasis, por ello es recomendable realizar intervenciones dirigidas a representantes, estudiantes y docentes, para atender paralelamente geohelmintiasis y nutrición para garantizar la calidad de vida(AU)


Geohelminthiasis are nematodes that affect man through the ingestion of parasitic eggs, affecting the anthropometric nutritional status of the infant population, which is why the objective was to determine the incidence of soil-transmitted helminthiasis in the anthropometric nutritional status in children aged 3 to 6 years of a school in Ecuador, during the last semester of 2018. A cross-sectional descriptive methodology was applied; where 92 preschoolers from 3 to 6 years old were included. Each child was given his or her nutritional anthropometric study, together with a coprological study of 45 children. There was obtained the Body Mass Index (BMI) with which there decided the nutritional state (BMI / Age / Sex), using the centiles of the Department of Public health of Ecuador. The BMI of the 35 children with geohelminiasis were reviewed and showed a slight decrease in the gain of anthropometric variables. The prevalence of female sex was found (54,35%), the age was 3,78 years, weight: 15,21 Kg and height: 100,23 cm2, the BMI was 16,62 Kg/cm2, with no differences between sex; the species of greatest occurrence was Trichuris trichiura 43,47% (girls 10/23) and 66,67% (boys 8/12). It is concluded that 29.34% of the preschools studied are malnourished, have geohelminthiasis, so it is advisable to make interventions aimed at representatives, students and teachers, to attend parallel geohelminthiasis and nutrition to ensure quality of life(AU)

Abstract This study aimed at examining the prevalence of eggs and larvae of parasites - that may cause diseases to humans and other animals - in the soil of public squares located on the shore of Laranjal beaches, in the Laguna dos Patos, in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Four fieldwork trips - one per season - were taken to collect samples on six squares built on the shore of these beaches. Five samples of soil were collected on every square on every fieldwork trip. The material was processed by Caldwell & Caldwell's technique. Four squares (66.7%) were positive for helminth eggs and sample positivity was 8.3% (10). Toxocara spp. and Ancylostoma spp. were the main genera found in these places. Even though prevalence was lower than the one observed by other studies which were carried out in the area, helminths with zoonotic potential were found in the soil of the squares. It should be highlighted that measures to control dogs in these areas must be implemented and public policies must be put forth to make pets' owners and beach goers aware of the need to mitigate environmental contamination.


Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a prevalência de ovos e larvas de parasitos - que podem causar doenças em humanos e outros animais - no solo de praças públicas localizadas na orla das praias do Laranjal, na Laguna dos Patos, em Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Quatro viagens de campo - uma por estação - foram realizadas em seis praças construídas na orla dessas praias. Cinco amostras de solo foram coletadas por praça em cada saída de campo. O material foi processado pela técnica de Caldwell e Caldwell. Quatro praças (66,7%) foram positivas para ovos de helmintos e a positividade da amostra foi de 8,3% (10). Toxocara spp. e Ancylostoma spp. foram os principais gêneros encontrados nesses locais. Embora a prevalência tenha sido menor que a observada por outros estudos realizados na área, helmintos com potencial zoonótico foram encontrados no solo das praças. Deve-se ressaltar que medidas para o controle de cães nessas áreas devem ser implementadas e políticas públicas devem ser concretizadas para tornar os donos de animais de estimação e frequentadores destas praias, conscientes da necessidade de mitigar a contaminação ambiental.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a ocorrência de parasitos gastrointestinais em 20 amostras fecais de gatos domésticos recebidas no Laboratório de Parasitologia Veterinária da Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz. As amostras foram recebidas no período de 19 de abril de 2018 a 09 de agosto de 2019, sendo de animais de diferentes raças e ambos os sexos. Dessas amostras (15/20) foram negativas e (5/20) foram positivas, onde o foram encontrados com maior frequência ovos de Ancylostoma spp. (4/20) além de uma amostra positiva para oocistos de Cystisospora spp (1/20). Os animais com amostras positivas eram animais com idade inferior a um ano e nunca tinham passado por acompanhamento veterinário. Enquanto o alto número de amostras negativas pode ser justificado por serem animais cuidados por membros da comunidade acadêmica e que já tinham passado por atendimento no Hospital Veterinário, realizando de tratamentos antiparasitários.(AU)


The objective of this work is to evaluate the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in 20 fecal samples from domestic cats received in the Laboratory of Veterinary Parasitology at the State University of Santa Cruz. The samples were received from April 19, 2018 to August 9, 2019 and were from animals of different breeds and both genders. From these samples, (15/20) were negative and (5/20) were positive. Eggs of Ancylostoma spp. were found more frequently, in 4 of the samples, and one (1) sample tested positive for oocysts of Cystisospora spp (1/20). The animals with positive samples were animals aged less than one year old and had never been through veterinary follow-up. The high number of negative samples can be justified because they were animals cared for by members of the academic community and that had already been seen by the staff at the Veterinary Hospital, performing antiparasitic treatments.(AU)


El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la presencia de parásitos gastrointestinales en 20 muestras fecales de gatos domésticos recibidas en el Laboratorio de Parasitología Veterinaria de la Universidad Estatal de Santa Cruz. Las muestras se recibieron desde el 19 de abril de 2018 hasta el 9 de agosto de 2019, y procedían de animales de diferentes razas y ambos sexos. De esas muestras (15/20) fueron negativas y (5/20) fueron positivas, donde los óvulos de Ancylostoma spp. se encontraron con más frecuencia. (4/20) y una muestra positiva para ooquistes de Cystisospora spp (1/20). Los animales con muestras positivas eran animales de menos de un año de edad y nunca habían sido acompañados por un veterinario. Si bien el elevado número de muestras negativas puede justificarse por tratarse de animales cuidados por miembros de la comunidad académica y que ya habían pasado por la asistencia en el Hospital Veterinario, realizando tratamientos antiparasitarios.(AU)

ABSTRACT

As hortaliças folhosas são ricas em vitaminas, sais minerais e fibras alimentares, proporcionando importantes benefícios para a saúde, o que acaba atraindo os consumidores, que costumam ingeri-las na forma crua, ficando expostos à contaminação por enteroparasitas. O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar a possível presença de enteroparasitas em alfaces (Lactuca sativa) comercializadas em três mercados municipais de Rio Branco, Acre. Foram analisadas 26 amostras de alfaces, onde as folhas das alfaces foram lavadas, em uma solução contendo 250 mL de água destilada e cinco gotas de detergente. O líquido foi filtrado em gazes de oito dobras e deixado sedimentar por 24 horas, à temperatura ambiente. Após o tempo decorrido o sobrenadante foi descartado, foram preparadas lâminas, que foram analisadas ao microscópio óptico. Os resultados obtidos neste estudo evidenciaram contaminação em 96,2% do total de amostras de alfaces analisadas. As principais estruturas parasitárias encontradas foram: Ascaridia sp., Eimeria sp., Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba histolytica, Ancylostoma sp., Strongyloides stercoralis, Enterobius vermicularis, Dipylidium caninum, Trichuris trichiura, Diphillobothrium latum e Balantidium sp. O enteroparasita mais abundante foi Ascaridia sp., tendo sido encontrados 164 (430) exemplares nas amostras, representando 38,14% do total de enteroparasitas encontrados. Ascaridia sp. foi também o enteroparasita mais frequente, sendo encontrada em 42,3% do total de amostras analisadas. Nesse contexto, a ingestão de alfaces cruas, provenientes dos mercados municipais estudados, pode representar risco potencial para os consumidores, caso elas não sejam higienizadas corretamente. Isto demonstra a importância de uma boa limpeza e desinfecção das folhas de alface antes do consumo.(AU)


Leafy vegetalizes are reich in vitaminas, mineral and. deitar febres, providing important health benefits, which ends up attracting consumers, who usually eat them in the raw form, being exposed to contamination by enteroparasites. The objective of the study was to verify the possible presence of enteroparasites in lettuce (Lactuca sativa) sold in three municipal markets in Rio Branco, Acre. 26 samples of lettuce were analyzed, where the lettuce leaves were washed, in a solution containing 250 mL of distilled water and. five drops of detergent. The liquid was filtered through eight-fold gauze and. left to settle for 24 hours at room temperature. After the elapsed time, the supernatant was discarded, slides were prepared and. analyzed under an optical microscope. The results obtained in this study showed contamination in 96.2% of the total samples of lettuce analyzed. The main parasitic structures found were: Ascaridia sp., Eimeria sp., Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba histolytica, Ancylostoma sp., Strongyloides stercoralis, Enterobius vermicularis, Dipylidium caninum, Trichuris trichiura, Diphillobothrium latum e Balantidium sp. The most abundant enteroparasite was Ascaridia sp., 164 (430) specimens were found in the samples, representing 38.14% of the total enteroparasites found. Ascaridia sp. was also the most common enteroparasite, was found in 42.3% of the total samples analyzed. In this context, ingestion of raw lettuce from the municipal markets studied may pose a potential risk to consumers if they are not properly sanitized. This demonstrates the importance of good cleaning and disinfection of lettuce leaves before consumption.(AU)


Las verduras de hoja son ricas en vitaminas, minerales y fibras dietéticas, aportando importantes beneficios para la salud, lo que acaba atrayendo a los consumidores, que suelen consumirlas crudas, quedando expuestas a la contaminación por enteroparásitos. El objetivo del estudio fue verificar la posible presencia de enteroparásitos en lechugas (Lactuca sativa) vendidas en tres mercados municipales de Rio Branco, Acre. Se analizaron 26 muestras de lechuga, donde se lavaron las hojas de lechuga, en una solución que contenía 250 mL de agua destilada y cinco gotas de detergente. El líquido se filtró a través de una gasa de ocho veces y se dejó reposar durante 24 horas a temperatura ambiente. Transcurrido el tiempo, se descartó el sobrenadante, se prepararon los portaobjetos y se analizaron al microscopio óptico. Los resultados obtenidos en este estudio mostraron contaminación en el 96,2% del total de muestras de lechuga analizadas. Las principales estructuras parasitarias encontradas fueron: Ascaridia sp., Eimeria sp., Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba histolytica, Ancylostoma sp., Strongyloides stercoralis, Enterobius vermicularis, Dipylidium caninum, Trichuris trichiura, Diphillobothrium latum y Balantidium sp. El enteroparásito más abundante fue Ascaridia sp., Se encontraron 164 (430) ejemplares en las muestras, lo que representa el 38,14% del total de enteroparásitos encontrados. ABSTRACT

In Brazil, dogs and cats have free access in public areas in some cities, such as squares, parks and beaches, despite restrictive laws for their permanence in these places. Animals infected with intestinal parasites contaminate the environment through their feces. The present study aimed to verify the occurrence of helminth eggs, oocysts and protozoan cysts in stool samples from three beaches in Greater Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, from March 2017 to April 2018. Stool samples were processed by the Willis-Mollay flotation technique and the Hoffman sedimentation technique. The percentage of 47.65% of positive samples for helminths or protozoa was found on the southern beaches of Florianópolis island, with an occurrence of 52.78% at Morro das Pedras Beach and 42.86% at Campeche Beach. At Pinheira beach, in Palhoça, 56.66% of the samples were contaminated with one or more zoonotic parasites. In this study, the most prevalent parasites on the three beaches analyzed were hookworms and Trichuris vulpis, followed by Giardia spp. and Cystoisospora spp. Samples containing To x o c a r a spp. eggs were collected at Pinheira beach. It is concluded that the contamination of the beaches in the present study constitutes a public health problem, considering the possibility of zoonoses transmission. The importance of implementing sanitary programs for the control of parasites in dogs and cats is emphasized, as well as awareness and education programs, in order to reduce environmental contamination in public places.(AU)


No Brasil, cães e gatos têm livre acesso em áreas públicas em algumas cidades, como praças, parques e praias, apesar de leis restritivas para sua permanência nestes locais. Animais infectados por parasitos intestinais contaminam o meio ambiente por meio de suas fezes. O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar a ocorrência de ovos de helmintos, oocistos e cistos de protozoários em amostras de fezes de três praias da Grande Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brasil, no período de março de 2017 a abril de 2018. As amostras de fezes foram processadas pela técnica de flutuação de Willis-Mollay e pela técnica de sedimentação de Hoffman. O percentual de 47,65% de amostras positivas para helmintos ou protozoários foi encontrado nas praias do sul da ilha de Florianópolis, na praia do Morro das Pedras a ocorrência foi de 52,78% e na do Campeche 42,86%. Na praia da Pinheira, em Palhoça, 56,66% das amostras estavam contaminadas com um ou mais parasitos zoonóticos. Os parasitos de maior ocorrência nas três praias analisadas foram os ancilostomídeos e Trichuris vulpis, seguidos de Giardia spp. e Cystoisospora spp. Amostras contendo ovos de To x o c a r a spp. foram colhidas na praia da Pinheira. Conclui-se que a contaminação das praias do presente estudo constitui um problema de saúde pública, tendo em vista à possibilidade de transmissão de zoonoses. Deve ser ressaltada a importância da implantação de programas sanitários para o controle de parasitas de cães e gatos e programas de conscientização e educação, a fim de reduzir a contaminação ambiental em locais públicos.(AU)

Abstract Soil samples collected near municipal schools (public/EMEI and private/EPEI schools), clubs (CLB), public squares (PS) and residential condominiums (CND) and samples of animal faeces from the Zoonosis Control Centre (CCZ) of the municipality of Votuporanga/SP were analysed using the Baermann method for the detection of zoonotic helminth larvae. The prevalence rates of the nematode genera identified were determined, and the results were compared using Fisher's exact and chi-square frequency tests. Information about cases of larvae migrans in the population were collected from the Family Health Units and the private health plans. All sites were positive for Ancylostoma spp. and, with the exception of EPEIs and dog faeces, for Strongyloides spp. The prevalence of Ancylostoma spp. was 87.5% for CND samples, 74.29% for EMIEs, 63.64% for CLB, 61.76% for PS and 64.29% for dog's and 42.86% for cats at CCZ. The prevalence of Strongyloides spp. ranged from 14.29% (cats/CCZ) to 41.18% (PS). Cases of cutaneous larva migrans were reported during interviews. Thus, from the public health perspective, the risk of individuals that frequent recreational areas in the municipality, especially children, to be infected by helminth larvae is noteworthy, indicating the need to develop policies aimed at controlling this important zoonosis.


Resumo Amostras de solo colhidas em escolas municipais (ensino público/EMEI e privado/EPEI), clubes (CLB), praças públicas (PP), condomínios residenciais (CND) e de fezes de animais do Centro de Controle de Zoonoses (CCZ) do município de Votuporanga/SP, foram submetidas ao método Baermann para detecção de larvas de helmintos zoonóticos. Foram determinadas as taxas de prevalência dos nematódeos identificados, e os resultados confrontados pelos testes Exato de Fisher e Qui-quadrado. Atendimentos de casos de larvas migrans na população foram levantados em entrevistas realizadas em Unidades de Saúde da Família e em planos de saúde privados. Todos os locais apresentaram positividade para Ancylostoma spp. e, com exceção de EPEIs e de fezes caninas, para Strongyloides spp. Prevalência de Ancylostoma spp. foi verificada em amostras de CNDs (87,50%), EMEIs (74,29%), CLBs (63,64%), PPs (61,76%) e em fezes de cães e gatos do CCZ (64,29% e 42,86%, respectivamente). As prevalências de Strongyloides spp. variaram de 14,29% (gatos/CCZ) a 41,18% (PP). Atendimentos de casos de larva migrans cutânea foram relatados nas entrevistas. Portanto, ressalta-se o risco de frequentadores de áreas de lazer do município, especialmente crianças, de adquirirem infecção por larvas de helmintos, indicando a necessidade da elaboração de propostas de políticas voltadas ao controle dessa importante zoonose.

Resumen La contaminación de suelos por parásitos gastrointestinales representa un problema mundial y un riesgo a la salud. Objetivo. Determinar la presencia de parásitos en heces de perros en los parques públicos del área. Materiales y métodos. Se recolectaron muestras de heces en 27 parques públicos de Metepec y Toluca Estado de México, mismos que se procesaron con 3 técnicas parasitológicas; 81.4% de los parques públicos resultaron positivos a parásitos gastrointestinales, con una frecuencia global de muestras del 16.5%. El porcentaje de parasitosis con potencial zoonótico fue de 81.3%; Toxocara spp, Ancylostoma spp y Giardia spp fueron las especies zoonóticas identificadas. Conclusiones. Los resultados indican que los parques de la zona conurbada de Toluca representan un problema de salud pública importante al ser una fuente de parásitos gastrointestinales zoonóticos de perro.


Abstract Soil contamination by gastrointestinal parasites represents a global problem and a health risk. Objective. Determine the presence of parasites in dog feces in public parks in the area. Materials and methods. Stool samples were collected in 27 public parks in Metepec and Toluca Estado de México, which were processed with 3 parasitological techniques; 81.4% of public parks were positive for gastrointestinal parasites, with an overall sample rate of 16.5%. The percentage of parasitosis with zoonotic potential was 81.3%; Toxocara spp, Ancylostoma spp and Giardia spp were the zoonotic species identified. Conclusions. The results indicate that parks in the conurbed area of Toluca represent a major public health problem as they are a source of zoonotic gastrointestinal parasites of dogs.

ABSTRACT

Melting temperature shift (T(m)-shift) is a new detection method that analyze the melting curve on real-time PCR thermocycler using SYBR Green I fluorescent dye. To establish a T(m)-shift method for the detection of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and A. tubaeforme in cats, specific primers, with GC tail of unequal length attached to their 5′ end, were designed based on 2 SNP loci (ITS101 and ITS296) of the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequences. The standard curve of T(m)-shift was established using the standard plasmids of A. ceylanicum (AceP) and A. tubaeforme (AtuP). The T(m)-shift method stability, sensitivity, and accuracy were tested with reference to the standard curve, and clinical fecal samples were also examined. The results demonstrated that the 2 sets of primers based on the 2 SNPs could accurately distinguish between A. ceylanicum and A. tubaeforme. The coefficient of variation (CV) of T(m)-values of AceP and AtuP was 0.07% and 0.06% in ITS101 and was 0.06% and 0.08% in ITS296, respectively. The minimum detectable DNA concentration was 5.22×10⁻⁶ and 5.28×10⁻⁶ ng/μl samples of AceP and AtuP, respectively. The accuracy of T(m)-shift method reached 100% based on examination of 10 hookworm DNA samples with known species. In the clinical detection of hookworm in 69 stray cat fecal sample, the T(m)-shift detection results were consistent with the microscopic examination and successfully differentiated between the 2-hookworm species. In conclusion, the developed method is a rapid, sensitive and accurate technique and can provide a promising tool for clinical detection and epidemiological investigation of cat-derived hookworms.

Introdução: A contaminação de praças ou ambientes de recreação por ovos de geohelmintos constitui um problema de saúde pública. O solo, com relação aos helmintos parasitas se comporta como um hospedeiro intermediário. Recebe fezes ou água contaminada por parasitas em estágios não infectantes, oferecendo-lhes condições para o desenvolvimento e protege os parasitas em estágios infectantes durante certo tempo para, posteriormente, transmiti-lo ao homem. O objetivo é verificar a ocorrência e a contaminação ambiental por parasitas com potencial zoonótico no solo de escolas infantis em dois municípios do Rio Grande do Sul. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo delineamento transversal, observacional e descritivo. A coleta foi através de amostras de areia em dez escolas de dois municípios, as coletas do material foram de cinco pontos diferentes, tanto da profundidade quanto da superfície, totalizando-se 100 amostras analisadas. As amostras de areia foram processadas em laboratório através dos métodos de Rugai e Hoffman, Pons e Janer. Resultados: Análise total (N=100) dos dois municípios, totalizando 50 amostras de cada. A contaminação das areias, por ovos de Ancylostoma spp., foi de 54% (n=27) no município I, sendo encontrados 56% (n=28) na cidade II. Conclusão: A ocorrência de ovos de Ancylostoma spp. no ambiente de recreação enfatiza a importância da adoção de medidas restritivas rígidas que impeçam a entrada de animais, como cães e gatos em locais de lazer. Além desses parasitas serem capazes de comprometer a saúde de humanos e infectar outros animais. (AU)


Introduction: Contamination of squares or recreational environments with geohelminth eggs is a public health problem. The soil serves as an intermediate host to helminths. It receives feces or water contaminated with parasites in non-infective stages, providing them with conditions for development, and protects parasites in infective stages for some time and then transmits them to humans. The aim was to investigate the occurrence of environmental contamination with parasites with zoonotic potential in the soil of nursery schools in two municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul state. Methods: A cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study was conducted. Soil samples were collected at ten schools in two municipalities, from five different school sites in terms of both depth and surface. Soil samples were processed at a laboratory using the methods of Rugai and Hoffman, Pons and Janer. Results: In total, 100 samples from the two municipalities were analyzed, 50 samples each. Soil contamination with Ancylostoma spp. eggs was 54% (n=27) in city I and 56% (n=28) in city II. Conclusions: The occurrence of Ancylostoma spp. eggs in recreational environments shows the importance of adopting strict restrictive measures to prevent animals, such as dogs and cats, from entering leisure areas. Also, these parasites may compromise human health and infect other animals. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Objetivos: Describir las características morfológicas diferenciales más relevantes de los estadios larvarios de uncinarias (Ancylostoma duodenale y Necator americanus), y S. stercoralis, para su identificación específica en laboratorio clínico convencional. Material y métodos: Estudio observacional durante julio del 2015 a agosto del 2016. Se realizaron cultivos en placa de agar de muestras fecales positivas por microscopía a larvas de nematodos o huevos de uncinaria. Las larvas desarrolladas en cultivo fueron descritas morfológicamente mediante claves, se identificaron las características morfológicas diferenciales más relevantes y se ilustraron mediante microfotografías. Resultados: Las características morfológicas más relevantes para la diferenciación específica fueron la longitud de la cavidad bucal y la prominencia del poro genital en el estadio rabditiforme; y la forma del cuerpo, el extremo terminal de la cola y el diámetro del extremo anterior del intestino en relación al esófago en el estadio filariforme. Conclusiones: Las uncinarias A. duodenale y N. americanus, y S. stercoralis pueden identificarse específicamente por microscopía óptica mediante el análisis morfológico de sus estadíos larvarios desarrollados en cultivo. Debido al requerimiento de equipos e insumos de uso común en laboratorio de microbiología, se recomienda esta metodología para uso en laboratorios clínicos convencionales. (AU)


Objectives: To determine the most relevant morphologic differences of larval stages of hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale y Necator americanus) and S. stercoralis for their specific identification in a conventional laboratory. Methods: An observational study was carried-out between July and August 2016. Positive fecal samples at microscopy to nematode larvae or to eggs of hookworms were cultured in agar plate. Larvae that developed in culture were described morphologically using passwords. We identified the most relevant differential morphologic features and illustrated them using microphotography. Results: The most relevant morphologic features that allow differentiating these nematodes were the longitude of the oral cavity and the prominence of the genital primordium for the rabditiform larva; the shape of the body, the terminal end of the tail and the diameter of the anterior extreme of the intestine in relation to the esophagus for the filariform larvae. Conclusions: Hookworms and S. stercoralis can be specifically identified by optic microscopic examination of their larval stages developed in culture. We recommend this methodology for conventional microbiology laboratories due to the requirement of simple equipment. (AU)

Helminths and protozoa are examples of endoparasites that, during their biological cycles, can alternate between free-life stages and parasitic stages in the environment. Pets, such as dogs and cats, live together with men and play an important role in the society; however, these animals may carry a large number of parasites which, besides showing direct pathogenicity to the host, represent risks to the human health, as is the case of parasitic zoonoses. Public areas like parks, gardens, squares and beaches may offer risks to human users since these environments may contain feces deposited by parasitized dogs. The present study verified the occurrence of helminth eggs and/or protozoan cysts or oocysts in fecal samples collected from sand strips at the beaches Armação do Pântano do Sul, Campeche and Morro das Pedras, in the south of Florianópolis Island, Santa Catarina State (SC), during the summer period. Pet feces were collected in the 2016/2017 summer season, from December 2016 to February 2017. In the Laboratory of Animal Parasitology (CCA-UFSC), fecal samples were processed based on Willis-Mollay flotation technique and Hoffman sedimentation technique. Samples from all three analyzed beaches were positive for the presence of parasites and fecal material was found along the seashore, sites where people walk freely and barefoot. Of 104 fecal samples collected, 45 (43.27%) were positive for one or more parasites. The greatest prevalence was found in Campeche Beach, which had 72.22% positive samples. Ancylostomids were most prevalent, indicating that cutaneous larva migrans is likely to occur in humans. Other parasites such as Trichuris vulpis, Toxocara spp. and Giardia spp. were also detected in coproparasitological analyses. Based on the results, it was concluded that contamination of the beaches in Florianópolis Island, SC, constitutes a public health problem due to the possibility of zoonosis transmission. These results reinforce the importance of establishing health programs for parasite control and educational programs for elucidating the risks of transmission of these zoonoses to the population, as an attempt to reduce environmental contamination risks at beaches of seaside resorts.(AU)


Helmintos e protozoários são exemplos de endoparasitas que, durante seus ciclos biológicos, podem alternar fases de vida livre e de vida parasitária no ambiente. Animais de companhia, como cães e gatos, possuem convívio direto com o homem e desempenham importante papel na sociedade, porém estes animais podem possuir muitos parasitas próprios que, além da patogenicidade direta ao hospedeiro, representam riscos à saúde humana, no caso das zoonoses parasitárias. A utilização de áreas públicas como parques, jardins, praças e praias por estes animais, pode oferecer riscos aos seus frequentadores humanos, uma vez que pode ocorrer a deposição de fezes nesses ambientes por cães parasitados. O presente estudo investigou a ocorrência de ovos de helmintos e/ou cistos ou oocistos de protozoários em amostras de fezes coletadas nas faixas de areia das praias da Armação do Pântano do Sul, Campeche e Morro das Pedras, no sul da ilha de Florianópolis, Estado de Santa Cararina-SC, Brasil, durante o período de verão. As coletas de amostras de fezes de animais domésticos foram realizadas na temporada de verão 2016/2017, a partir de dezembro de 2016 até fevereiro de 2017. No Laboratório de Parasitologia Animal (CCA-UFSC), as amostras de fezes foram processadas pela técnica de flutuação de Willis-Mollay e pela técnica de sedimentação de Hoffman. Amostras colhidas nas três praias analisadas mostraram-se positivas para a presença de parasitos. Material fecal foi observado ao longo de toda orla, locais em que as pessoas caminham livremente e sem calçados. De um total de 104 amostras de fezes coletadas nas praias, 45 (43,27%) estavam positivas a um ou mais parasitas. A praia do Campeche foi a que apresentou maior prevalência, com 72,22% de amostras positivas. Os ancilostomídeos, responsáveis pela larva migrans cutânea em humanos, foram os mais prevalentes. Outros parasitas como Trichuris vulpis, Toxocara spp. e Giardia spp. também foram detectados nas análises coproparasitológicas. Com base nos resultados obtidos, concluímos que a contaminação das praias na Ilha de Florianópolis, SC, constitui um problema de saúde pública, devido à possibilidade de transmissão de zoonoses. Estes resultados reforçam a importância da implantação de programas sanitários de controle de parasitas e programas de educação, esclarecendo os riscos de transmissão destas zoonoses à população, a fim de reduzir os riscos de contaminação ambiental nas praias de balneários.(AU)

ABSTRACT

A 20-year-old Cambodian male living in Korea for 2 years as a foreign worker visited our gastroenterology outpatient clinic. He had a small farm in Cambodia. He complained of postprandial upper abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting for 2 years. Gastroduodenoscopy showed hyperemic mucosa near the major papilla in the duodenum and two small and slender reddish worms. These were removed with endoscopic biopsy forceps. Under microscopy, these were identified as Ancylostoma duodenale by the characteristic morphology of 2 pairs of cutting teeth in the buccal cavity and 3 lobes in the copulatory bursa. After removal of two worms, his symptom improved. Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) present a global health problem. In the Republic of Korea, STH, including hookworms, were highly prevalent until the 1970s. With mass fecal examination followed by selective mass chemotherapy with anthelmintics from 1969 to 1995, the prevalence of STH has rapidly decreased since the 1980s. Since 2004, no hookworms have been found in nationwide surveys on the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection. Therefore, we report a case of in vivo endoscopic removal of A. duodenale in a patient with abdominal pain.
